I think by showing players what position in the leaderboard they hold for a certain skill will encourage them to train harder and grind more xp. With an added level of competition provided by this implementation, I think new and returning players will enjoy grinding it out with their friends/competitors.
I think the ability to see your current rank compared to other players in the game is a huge motivation to continue to play and earn more and more exp.
