In Christian art the angels, and therefore also Gabriel, are portrayed as a man in a long robe with wings on the back and with a halo around his head as a symbol of holiness. In paintings or Byzantine icons of the "Annunciation", the angel Gabriel often has white lilies in his hand, as a symbol of the virginity of Mary; sometimes a trumpet (symbol of the announcement of an important event). On icons depicting the archangel Gabriel alone, he usually holds a staff as a symbol of his quality as a Divine messenger. cf. Hermes in Classical antiquity.
