Hey Tauri, so can you give some explanation on what is an offensive name? Because I don’t see how basically “fuck to gain” is offensive but y’all allow players using the N word in their name, we have “black bitch”, “autism one, two, three, etc”, people referencing drinking cum, and people referencing retard in multiple ways. Of course this, and all the other names, are seeking attention by trying to make it as vile as possible, but I’m sure saying fuck a staff member is hardly keeping anything clean compared to the other names which are MUCH more offensive. If someone’s skin is thin enough to need “protection” from minor criticism (which has been fairly earned throughout the years from my understanding) then just maybe they aren’t fit to hold the kind of power an admin has… you’re saying no one was offended, yet they brought it to YOUR attention, so clearly someone was offended enough to think they need to have your input before doing what they clearly wanted to do, which was to ban Alan. Maybe it’s a bad taste that Alan of all people was the messenger, but like crohn said, it shouldn’t be against the rules to be cringe.
Hi Variant! Sure, I can give some explanation about offensive names and how we are approaching to this.
So, offensive names mostly are racist or target another player in whatever malicious intention (attention, defamation etc.). Thankfully it is very likely that a non-staff member is targeted with any usernames (even though that has happened recently), but for example if we see that someone was to choose an username along the lines of "Fuck Variant" for example, we would not reach out to you and ask you if that offends you or not, we would still deal with the account name.
There are some usernames, that as you said, could be considered offensive. I do agree with your point, but now even though we could see intention of the username, we would not opt to ban the username (for example I saw an account called "im restarted" yesterday and if I was to ban him because of the name, then it would raise more concerns than the current topic). But overall, yeah some names (not the one used as an example IMO) should not belong to the game and I'll have a look of what we can possibly do in order to prevent that.
It was brought to my attention (and other staff members), because sometimes people can ask for different perspectives and then work our way to the middle ground. Currently I am thankful that it was brought to my attention, saves me an hour or two looking further into it and trying to understand the details (which I already know because I was part of the decision made). I think it is normal that those things are brought to my attention, don't you?
It is not about whether someone got hurt or someone needs to protected, this same thing would apply if someone targeted a non-staff member with offensive usernames. Unfortunately, our eyes are not everywhere in the game when it comes to those matters, so we also rely on reports by players in regards to offensive usernames.
I hope you got the answers you asked for, if not feel free to let me know.
Take care!
