I would like to see some changes in how the winners of the monthly vote competitions are selected.

Throughout November's voting competition, I voted 4 times daily, from start to finish, and I was really aiming to be in the top 5. I felt like I performed well in December's competition too, but I fell short both times.

I was hoping to spot some well-known players in the top 5 winners from November's voting competition, but it was all fresh faces. This month is pretty similar, except for one person.

3 out of the 5 winners of the December voting competition all registered this month and this year. One signed up on the 7th, another on the 17th, and the last one on the 9th. Granted, the winners who registered on the 7th and 9th could have accumulated over 30 votes before the 21st, but regardless, something feels off. And the person who registered on the 17th would have had to vote 30+ times in just a few days, which certainly raises some red flags about possible VPN misuse.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, and I do apologise in advance if I am, but I really think that a lot of the winners in the monthly voting competitions aren't really legit. I’d much rather see the players who truly deserve to win actually get their moment.

I don't know if this is the case, but the voting rewards are the biggest for new players. I personally don't really vote anymore since the incentive isn't there anymore. I don't need anything from the vote store, and should I need it or want some bonus xp, i'll just buy votebooks instead of voting.

When it comes to the concerns of VPN voting, I do hope they check for that before announcing the winners. But one can only hope

EDIT: I also recall that I won the competition one month over a year ago, and I know I voted like at max 2-3 times. I did buy a bunch of votebooks tho, so i'm not really sure how it's calculated.

Omicron tracks how many times a player has voted and gets an auth code from the voting page. Those with more than 30 votes and received auth codes will be put into a random draw. Voting is a great way to motivate new players, but it's also well-known that some of them use VPNs to cheat the system to dodge the grind of the Thieving skill and grab some easy starter gp.

I have my doubts about many of these new players winning the monthly voting competitions. It definitely makes me question things when a winner pops up who only registered several days before the competition ended.

@Cabin Fever We currently track auths claimed on any given account, since this is the most consistent way to gather players into the pool to be randomly selected from. This means, in theory, a player who registered a new account the day before the competition ends, and claims 30 auths they had (assuming they're able to do that) would be entered to win. I understand this month had a lot of newer players win (which is not a bad thing), but generally what we see is players who have been around a long time (including many staff/veterans) winning. There isn't much we can do to further improve how we track the votes without restricting voting a lot, which would also make getting 30 votes within the time period that the competition runs for extremely difficult.
