So I’m building an Alora, Merry Thief deck, and I’m wondering if the target creature I select with her ability will come back to my hand even if it changes zones (i.e. if it goes to the graveyard after combat)? I was going to throw a Living Lore in there, but I’m not sure if once it deals damage and is sacked if it’ll come back to my hand.

For the ability to return the creature to your hand at the beginning of the next end step, the creature needs to be in the same zone (the battlefield) when the ability triggers at the end of the turn. If the creature changes zones (e.g., goes to the graveyard as you mentioned), it becomes a new object with no memory of its previous existence. Therefore, it will not be returned to your hand.

In the case of Living Lore:

  1. Living Lore enters the battlefield and exiles an instant or sorcery card from your graveyard with a mana value equal to or less than the amount of mana you spent to cast Living Lore.
  2. When Living Lore deals combat damage, its triggered ability will cause you to sacrifice it to cast the exiled card without paying its mana cost.

Since Living Lore will be sacrificed (changing zones) after dealing combat damage, it will not be on the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step for Alora, Merry Thief's ability to return it to your hand.
