Equipment
Example on setup
Equipment for Zalcano isn't too important
I will be focusing on the most important aspects of the equipment
Pickaxes
The better the pickaxe - the faster you get tephra
If your pickaxe is dragon or higher, remember to use the special attack to increase your mining level!
Smashing!
Here's a list of the pickaxes rated from good to bad
Good
Crystal pickaxe
Dragon pickaxe(s) / 3rd Age pickaxe
Rune pickaxe / Gilded pickaxe
Trash pickaxe(s)
Bad
Inventory
The only thing you really need is survivability.
In order to survive you must:
Have health
Bring some food/brews
Have prayer points
Bring prayer potions
Have run energy
Bring an energy/stamina potion
We mustn't forget to save inventory space for the tephra that we'll be mining!
Here's an example of an inventory
You might want to bring more food
Learn by trial and error! If you run out of energy, bring more stamina potions
Armour
When it comes to armour we're looking for some specific aspects.
Prioritize special effects such as extra chance of mining ore
Aside from that we want:
Low weight or reduced run energy consumption so we can run longer
High prayer bonus so we can reduce the rate of prayer drain
Cape
The Mining cape(t) passive gives a 10% chance of obtaining an additional ore whilst mining, this applies to tephra too.
This effect is included in the Comp. monkey and Max cape variants, but their additional effects and stats makes them better.
Here's a list of the capes rated from good to bad
Good
Completionist monkey
Max cape
Mining cape(t)
Hitpoints cape(t)
Agility cape(t)
Graceful cape
Ardougne cloak
Bad
Body
Varrock armour gives a similar effect to Mining cape (t). A 10% chance of mining two ores rather than one.
This stacks with the mining cape effect, making it the best option.
Even if you don't have level 4, the lesser variants are still better than any alternative.
If you haven't yet completed the Varrock diaries, check out the Achievement Diary Guide
Speaking of the Achievement diary, the Falador diary and Lubmridge & Draynor diary are worth looking in to
The Falador shield and Explorers ring provide beneficial special effects
Depending on the tier they can restore prayer points and run energy a few times daily
The rest
The remaining equipment slots aren't worth too much trouble.
Prioritize low weight and high prayer bonus as mentioned before
Consider these options
Graceful
Increased run energy restoration
Prospector
Small percentage boost to mining experience

Fighting Zalcano
Mining tephra
When you're mining tephra, one of the rock formations will be glowing.
When mining the glowing rock formation, you will receive double the amount of tephra
Be careful though! Zalcano can throw a red ball of energy towards the glowing rock.
This will deal around 24-30 damage to all those within 1 tile of the glowing rock, and a different rock will start to glow.
Keep your eyes on Zalcano whilst mining the glowing rock
Smithing and imbuing tephra
When you smith and imbue your tephra, clicking once wont suffice.
Click fast and click hard , just like your instincts tell you to do!
Clicking once
Spam-clicking
The principle of spam-clicking applies to both smithing and imbuing, but I couldn't be arsed to showcase the latter
Attacking Zalcano
Zalcano has 300 points of shield and 1000 hitpoints.
Throw the Imbued tephra to damage her shields, once depleted you can 'attack' her with your pickaxe.
After a brief moment she will stand up again with a renewed shield.
If Zalcano has summoned blue and red circles, step into a blue circle to greatly increase your damage and aim
Two players attacking Zalcano from a blue circle
Zalcano fights back
Zalcano has 6 actions which she uses to fight the players
Here's a brief resume to explain what she does and how to react
The attacks happen at random
The unavoidable pebbles
Zalcano stomps the ground, causing all players to take between 0-6 unavoidable damage
~ ~ ~
The falling boulders
Zalcano stomps the ground, causing several boulders to fall from above.
The boulders are easily side-stepped, but will deal high damage if you do not move in time.
Ouch
Ou- not today
~ ~ ~
The demonic circles
Zalcano does the jazz hands and summons red and blue demonic circles.
Red circles will damage you continually as you stand in them whilst also draining run energy.
Blue circles will empower you, giving you increased accuracy and damage.
You can avoid damage from red circles by walking in L shapes

The healing golem
Zalcano tosses a ball of red energy towards the furnace or the southern wall.
This summons a golem with 14 hitpoints which walks towards Zalcano.
Upon reaching her, she heals for 50 hitpoints.
Damaging the golem along the way will reduce the healing proportionally to the damage dealt.
Upon killing the golem it drops between 16-24 imbued tephra
South-eastern wall
Southern wall
Once you've obtained Imbued tephra you want to move towards the spawn points
By being nearby you have the best chance to kill them and gain additional Imbued tephra.
Killing a golem
Killing a golem brings great amount of imbued tephra, much faster than mining it yourself.

The glowing rock
Zalcano throws a ball of red energy towards the current glowing rock.
Players within 1 tile of the glowing rock takes around 30 damage
As soon as the rock is hit, a new rock becomes the glowing rock.
It's a good idea to keep your eyes on Zalcano whilst mining the glowing rock, so you can react in time
~ ~ ~
The no-no square
After mining Zalcano for a brief moment, she will get back up with her shield renewed.
As she stands up she releases a shockwave that damages all nearby players and stuns them for a short moment.
You can avoid the shockwave by moving away from Zalcano.
The shockwave also destroys any tephra in players inventory or on the ground.
Zalcano is a team boss
When fighting Zalcano, you must adapt to the amount of players
Zalcano mass events
When you're fighting Zalcano with 10+ players, you have to swiftly deal sufficient damage in order to become eligible for loot.
If you spend too long crafting your imbued tephra, Zalcano will lose her shield before you can even throw it!
You must deal at least 30 damage to her shield and health - 50 for uniques / pet
When you're at a Zalcano mass, you generally want between 2 and 4 tephra

- Don't prioritize glowing rock formations -
- Don't focus on killing golems -

Zalcano with friends
Generally you don't want to solo Zalcano, it's too time consuming and your chances of hitting the unique drop table is capped.
The chances will not increase past 300 damage to her shield and 400 damage to her health.
The optimal amount of players is around 4.
With this few players, you want to get as much tephra as possible, at the very least 10-20

Loot
Zalcano is definitely worth fighting!
Especially so if you're an ironman
Her loot is separated into three categories
Always, primary and unique.
Always
Zalcano 'always' drop ashes, but only one player obtains them; the MVP.
If you receive ashes drop, you did well!
As a bonus, you also receive a 10% increase of the non-unique loot you got
Primary
You can either get runes or materials
To qualify for this you must deal at least 30 damage to Zalcano's shield and hitpoints.
Runes
Materials
Unique
To qualify for this loot, you must deal at least 50 damage to both Zalcano's shield and hitpoints.
As you can see, the quantity of the primary drop table is very high.
That makes Zalcano a good place to get Steel bars and Gold ores in bulk
Not to mention valuable runes, gems and crystal shards
Here's an example of what to expect
Thank you very much for reading
See you at ;;Zalcano
